Special Education Programs

Prairie Crossing offers a variety of Special Education services including  Learning Services, Speech Language Services, Health Services, Mental Health Services and Occupational Therapy.  These services are provided through our mild /moderate department or our center-based affective needs program.


Mild/Moderate Special Education Department:

This programming assists students in developing skills and learning behaviors which enable him/her to benefit from the general education program, even with the challenges presented by their disability. Programming offers support in the learning content area or language processing area which makes learning in the conventional sense, difficult. Delivery of service is through collaboration (team teaching), consultation, differentiated instruction, materials modification, small group instruction and/or direct instruction within the special education setting.

Currently our staff consists of 2 full time Learning Specialists, a full time school psychologists, part time Social worker, full time Speech Language Pathologist and itinerate occupational therapist.

Affective Needs Program:

An Affective Needs center-based program is an intensive, more restrictive Special Education program designed to support students who demonstrate significant gaps in skills related to social emotional learning (SEL) - self-regulation; self-management; social awareness; relationship skills; decision-making skills - manifested by frequent and/or intense unexpected behaviors. The student has not responded successfully to varied interventions within their current environment. These skill gaps may be related to a variety of educationally-based disability categories.  The district has allocated a concentration of personnel resources to various school sites throughout the district for these programs. The AN program has a higher staff-to-student ratio than moderate needs Special Education programming to allow for more targeted proactive and responsive behavior intervention/management. There is dedicated classroom space available outside of the general education classroom to provide a safe environment to access sensory accommodations and adult support for emotional regulation when needed. AN programming includes greater amounts of service time with a school mental health provider to deliver an increased level of specialized instruction around lagging SEL skills. The AN teacher provides intensive case management for each student (maintains high levels of communication with key stakeholders; facilitates robust data collection; oversees implementation of IEP).  There are allocated Educational Assistants to support student interventions as part of the program. All staff associated with the program are required to maintain certification with the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) by completing annual training in de-escalation techniques as well as safe crisis management skills. Additional training in disability awareness and effective behavior intervention is encouraged for program staff as well.
